Teenager obsessed by suicide kills self in UT dorm room A University of Tennessee student whom authorities said apparently was fascinated by suicide killed himself inside his dormitory room Saturday night during the homecoming football game. The teenager's identity was not immediately released pending notification of relatives. His body was found just after 7:30 p.m. hanging from a rod in the closet of his Morrill Hall dorm room, police said. The student's roommate found the hanged teenager as he returned to the 20th Street dormitory after attending the UT homecoming game, according to the Knoxville Police Department. Also found inside the room were large amounts of suicide literature, according to police. There also was a suicide topic on the screen of the computer inside the room, police said. KPD Investigator Ken Slagle said the student's roommate indicated the teenager was obsessed with the idea of suicide. Further details were not immediately available. Morrill
resident dies in apparent suicide Erin Hudson / Staff Writer A UT male student apparently hanged himself in his fourth-floor closet of Morrill Hall on Saturday afternoon, Knoxville Police said. The male, whose name has not been released, was found at approximately 7:30 p.m. by his roommate who had returned from the UT-University of Alabama-Birmingham football game. KPD Sgt. Roger White said the roommate cut the rope and tried to revive him, but the student was already dead. The student sent out several e-mails to students saying he would kill himself and would be dead by the time the e-mails were read. Police said the roommate reported the student to be in a good mood when he left to go to the game. KPD had previously been called in because the student had attempted to cut his wrists. He had mutilation marks on his body. The roommate said the student had been seeing a counselor and had been talking on a suicide-prevention chat room. The UT Police Department, in charge of releasing the student's name, is still attempting to notify the student's family. From The Daily Beacon (UTK student newspaper) - Nov. 9, 1998 issue |
