How can I create a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to yip.org using Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)?

This method of connecting has four advantages over tunneling ports over ssh:

  1. It will encrypt all traffic to and from yip.org.
  2. It can be set up to connect automatically.
  3. It will seem familiar to those who have used modems to connect to their ISP.
  4. It can be used in conjunction with tunneling ports over ssh to create a connection that is even more secure than with ssh alone.

It also has several disadvantages:

  1. The strength of the encryption is much lower if it is not used with ssh port forwarding.
  2. You must contact us to obtain a username and password for the connection in addition to your yip.org account. You cannot use your yip.org username and password to connect due to security issues.
  3. It is potentially more difficult to get working, as compatibility problems and firewall issues may arise which are not easily troubleshot.

We will soon have instructions with screenshots on creating a connection via Windows 98 SE here. More effort will be put into this if anyone actually asks us for a PPTP username & password.
