How can I create a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to yip.org using
Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)?
This method of connecting has four advantages over tunneling ports over ssh:
- It will encrypt all traffic to and from yip.org.
- It can be set up to connect automatically.
- It will seem familiar to those who have used modems to connect to their ISP.
- It can be used in conjunction with tunneling ports over ssh to create a
connection that is even more secure than with ssh alone.
It also has several disadvantages:
- The strength of the encryption is much lower if it is not used with ssh port
forwarding.
- You must contact us to obtain a username and password for the connection in
addition to your yip.org account. You cannot use your yip.org username and
password to connect due to security issues.
- It is potentially more difficult to get working, as compatibility problems
and firewall issues may arise which are not easily troubleshot.
Currently we only have instructions on creating a connection via Windows 98
SE, here.
