Klip

by Milky

Klip's parents had died when he was only seven. Klip had not wanted to go to an orphanage, so he had hidden their bodies and slowly but surely figured out how to run the house by himself. He had learned to forge his dad's signature, got helpful strangers to teach him the intricacies of bank machine use, sold family possessions and learned to shop and cook and clean. Klip went to school when he felt like it and stayed home when he didn't.

When Klip was ten, everyone in his community died. Klip realized that any government inquiries would simply bring unwanted questions, so he hid the bodies and began to manage his whole community. He sold their possessions to pay the taxes, made the appropriate phone calls and sent the appropriate letters. He managed the local stores and kept up the local parks and schools. Klip didn't mind the extra responsibility - it was kind of fun.

Only a year later, everyone in Klip's city died. Klip knew that the government would notice this unless he tried extra hard to cover it up. He quickly hid all the bodies and assumed the chores which had previously been looked after by his fellow citizens: running the factories, managing the airlines, keeping the electricity, water and phones working and all the other functions performed by a large city. Klip was quite busy, but managed to keep up the facade of a normal, inhabited city.

A few months later, the rest of the continent died and Klip quickly took up the role which only he could fill. He hid the millions of corpses and began to get his continent functioning as usual. He assumed his various roles in the UN, managed international trade and continued the arms race. To Klip's knowledge, no-one commented on any change in the persona of his continent, except some praise for its increased efficiency.

Unfortunately, all Klip's work went to waste when the rest of the Earth died a week or two later. Undefeated, Klip sighed with relief. Now there was no need to keep up appearances. Klip began to decorate the globe to suit his tastes. He had the factories produce items he wanted. The farms produced only Klip's favourite foods. It was bliss.

Four days later, an alien civilization which had been monitoring the Earth launched a large nuclear missile into Klip's head. Klip died.
